Library Street Collective will present a collection of works for the 2025 edition of The Armory Show that share an emergence of natural pattern within the intuitive abstractions of Patrick Alston, Gary Lang, and Basil Kincaid. Rooted in instinct, each artist manifests a unique connection to forces within nature that guide–directly or indirectly–decisions and movements towards a form of abstraction that speaks to our energetic reciprocity with the natural world. While Lang’s concentric circle paintings suggest a more direct connection to this idea through their resemblance to the ripples of a water drop or the rings of time in tree trunks, Alston’s mark making touches on visual patterns in nature that repeat more chaotically (meanders, turbulences, waves) through the impulse of a hand given freedom from thought. His inclination leans towards a distinctive hatching and horizontality that layers color and texture in a loose pattern that has become his signature. Kincaid’s works utilize the disruption of computational mathematical patterns and as such, consider the inherent nature of mathematics that is proven through the incidence of symmetry, spirals, and repetition that we see all over the natural world. Kincaid further disrupts these patterns through the use of hand weaving and embroidery, transcribing pattern and glitching to natural materials.
