Library Street Collective is excited to announce HORSE: A Game for Everyone by artist Tyrrell Winston, supported by Bedrock Detroit. Opening to the public on August 1, 2025, this dynamic installation transforms the boundaries between sport, art, and community participation.

HORSE reimagines the basketball court as a site of creativity, memory, and public engagement. Inspired by Winston’s signature use of found and culturally charged materials, this interactive experience invites visitors to engage with art through motion, reflection, and play. Central to the installation is a sculptural “hoop tree” that reimagines the familiar form of the basketball hoop into a sprawling, seven-armed tree supporting 21 hoops at varying heights, angles, and orientations. Part monument, part playground, the work invites direct engagement, encouraging visitors to step into the space, pick up a ball, and play.

Backdropping the interactive sculpture is Winston’s most ambitious and expansive “Punishment Painting” to date. At 30 feet high by 60 feet long, the monumental canvas underscores the artist’s continued exploration of the inherent and designated value of signed objects. Through abstracted appropriation of celebrity athletes’ signatures, Winston challenges concepts of fame, grandiosity and authenticity. The overwhelming scale of the work reinforces its conceptual weight, looming over the court as both a visual anchor and a symbolic pressure point within the installation.

Mounted along one wall of the installation is a signature large-scale basketball sculpture, which Winston composed entirely of found and weathered balls. These assemblages explore the embedded histories of discarded objects, each ball bearing the marks of time, use, and neglect. Reconfigured into a singular form, the piece becomes a meditation on memory, material consequence, and collective nostalgia. As with much of Winston’s work, the sculpture invites reflection on the broader tension between what society discards and what it chooses to preserve.

“Basketball has always been more than a game, it’s a vessel for memory, identity, and expression,” says Winston. “With HORSE, I wanted to create a space where people can see themselves in the work, literally and metaphorically. Every shot taken, every moment spent here becomes part of the piece’s evolving narrative.”

The installation’s title, HORSE, nods to the classic playground game—a creative contest of skill and style in which players take turns mimicking each other’s basketball shots. This reference evokes childhood memories, collaborative play, and the joy of shared imagination, while also challenging participants to bring their originality and expression into the court-like space, an attribute underscored by the idiosyncratic nature of the hoops. The game then becomes a metaphor: a dialogue between players, between past and present, between the artwork and its audience.

Detroit-based design studio Supper’s collaborative design approach helped shape the physical experience of HORSE, bringing fluidity, movement, and intentional tension to the layout. Their sensitivity to spatial narrative supports Winston’s vision of blending sculpture, sport, and emotional resonance, enabling a multisensory interaction that is as much about the process as the result.

HORSE: A Game for Everyone will be open to the public from August 1 to October 5, 2025, at 1001 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48226. Admission is free.
