For the inaugural 2025 edition of Untitled Houston, Library Street Collective presents new works by Houston-based artist Paul Kremer and Los Angeles-based artist Geoff McFetridge, on view from September 18–21, 2025.

Their distinctive yet complementary practices take the natural world into the realm of abstraction, minimalism, and graphic sensibility, encouraging dialogue between the depth and complexity of the natural world and the two-dimensional plane of their canvas. Both artists find power in simplicity, distilling moments, movements, and systems to their most elemental colors and forms.

McFetridge brings to Houston an exciting evolution in his work through a new series of intimate oil paintings, seceding from colorful iconographic forms to moodier palettes and visible brush strokes. Still, his figures are identifiable through their stark, stylized curves and atomization; in A California Dance, a man in characteristic blue pants and white shirt breaks down into smaller and smaller globules of himself as he vanishes into the dark background of the canvas. His forms are now rounded, impeccably expressed in light and shadow, where pops of red and orange are used strategically in a sea of neutrals. Another work (Interior Ajar) is cropped on an empty car in the desert, its door open to reveal a composition made almost entirely of rhythmic shifts in color and line to depict glass, reflection, and cast shadow.

Kremer also presents a new body of work using fluid acrylic stain to depict the undulating peaks and valleys of ocean waves. The liquidity of the dye absorbs into raw canvas and pools around the edges of Kremer’s brush strokes; and follows gravity toward the lower portion of his shapes, giving weight and buoyancy to the paint itself. Waves 09 recalls the rainbow streaks of Morris Louis, who was fascinated by the use of vivid ribbons of color on a wide open canvas to invoke freedom and space within the pictorial field. Kremer achieves this as well, his substantial, static forms somehow lapping and gliding across the picture plane. Waves 05 seems to give us a peak under the surface of the water where two waves meet in a moment of interference that creates dark oblong forms, further exaggerating their natural cadence.
